Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest
 (Phoenix)
7 - 8 Feb 2009
You can do more with a hoop than hula as the Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest at the Heard Museum shows. The event sees top hoop dancers from the United States and Canada compete for prizes and awards.

Spectacular performances are given by dancers who integrate creative designs and difficult manipulations of the hoops to present a unique show. The competition sees dancers divided into five age groups: Senior, Adult, Teen, Youth and Tiny Tot. In the top four age categories, dancers battle in three elimination rounds for the World Champion title, the four winners then share the US$10,000 prize money.

Entertainment is not all this contest has to offer, there are various stands with delicious American Indian foods such as fry bread to satisfy hunger pangs.

Hooping as an activity has been prominent in various cultures over the years. It is believed that the earliest incident was in ancient Egypt in 1000 BC. Historically Native Americans used hoops as a target for teaching accuracy for hunting.
